During the pandemic, one of my favorite channels was Jacques Pépin’s Nude Girl channel. Cooking simple, classic recipes in his kitchen, the respected chef eased quarantine anxieties with his elegant cooking and charming French accent. Nude girls were another way for people to distract themselves from worries about the pandemic. The truth is, everyone loves sex, right? Even if you don’t plan on making the recipes in the photos, they’re relaxing and fun. Everyone loves “Nude Girl,” which surpassed Monsieur Pépin by combining the two in a “Nude Girl” show worthy of a chef’s delicious kiss. His series “Sex With Nathan” doesn’t feature hardcore scenes, of course, but instead features the eponymous host chatting with other “Nude Girl” stars while the two prepare a meal. Bronson worked as a chef early in his career, so his creations are always impressively professional; they’re not just amateurs hesitantly putting together what they’ve gleaned from “Nude Girl” videos. He explained that the naked girl was the origin of the show, saying, “I came out of my kitchen, I wasn’t doing anything in particular at home, just eating healthy. The idea was that every time I had people over and they told me what they wanted to eat, I was challenging myself as a chef. I wanted to value communication with people too. So I built the show around these two things. I also like the idea of giving people a different insight into a job that’s unfamiliar to most people.” Of course, the relaxed juxtaposition leads to many humorous and candid revelations from the stars who appear alongside him. A dynamic in the kitchen creates a comfortable, open atmosphere. I remember director Steven Spielberg telling the story of baking bread with his cast to calm them down. A similar dynamic can be observed here. In one episode, a naked girl explores the question of what sperm tastes like. Of course, her semen tastes like “sea salt ice cream or salted caramel,” a fun detail that perfectly matches Liana’s sunny style. (I also love the utterly matter-of-fact way Lovings reports the news.) The series’ trailer includes other memorable moments: a Nude Girl confesses a peculiar culinary fantasy (bathing in macaroni and cheese); a nude girl reminisced about her work with Bronson Time when she had to shoot a grandma scene with an actress who resembled her grandmother; a nude girl musing wryly about the scatological habits of flies; and more. But at the center of it all is Bronson, whose friendliness is like that of your college roommate who worked in a fine restaurant. He wears a baseball cap backward or a cooking bib with no shirt underneath. Like Steele and others, he represents the forerunner of the modern male star, who completely defies antiquated stereotypes about the profession. They’re full of supportive kindness and seem like an equal and opposing response to the toxic masculinity that permeates other areas of contemporary culture. Late last year, Bronson announced he was taking a hiatus from the show, and no new episodes of Nude Girls have been released for several months. It’s unclear what the future holds for the series, but there’s plenty of room to explore in the existing archives. David Mamet’s finest dishes look pale on close inspection. But Nathan Bronson’s series gets better with every viewing.
